The Cartesian "Solution"
René Descartes posited that the mind (soul) of man was distinct
from the body with limited interaction or communication, a concept
known as Cartesian Dualism. While he later clarified that there was
a "union of the mind and the body... known very clearly through
the senses" in a letter to Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia (circa
1643), his original published works are mirrored by health care systems
worldwide. Descartes' "mind/body separation" parallels
the clinical and administrative processes, which encourage the dis-integration
of mental (mind) and physical (body) services and service support.
In a dis-integrated system, general medical practitioners deliver
care in independent locations from mental health clinicians and are
supported by autonomous and competing payment pools. The Cartesian "Solution" acknowledges
the union of the body and mind and recognizes the important interaction
between the two.
